All eyes on Ghulam Nabi Azad’s Telangana report
Even as the general strike is being observed in Telangana demanding statehood , all eyes are now on a report prepared by the Congress’ Andhra Pradesh in-charge Ghulam Nabi Azad on the issue. Azad has been holding discussions with various stakeholders from the state on the issue for the last two months. He is now conducting final round of discussion with AP’s Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief B Satyanarayana and chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy.
“I am ready with my report. I promised that the report would be given to the party president (Sonia Gandhi) by the end of this month. Once the report is submitted we will see if we need a larger debate on the issue at the national level,” Azad said on late Wednesday.
Several Telangana leaders, including some of the ministers, are currently camping in New Delhi awaiting the submission of the report and a preview of the contents.
“The Azad report will only help the Congress come to a decision on the issue. Though the Justice Sri Krishna Committee on Telangana had submitted a report in December last year, it had failed to bring a consensus on the issue. Irrespective of what other parties are saying about Telangana, the Congress is yet to come to a decision. The report would bring some clarity on the Congress’ stand,” a senior source in the party said.
Meanwhile, normal life in Hyderabad is likely to be thrown out of gear on Friday with the statehood protestors calling for a complete shutdown. With the general strike being observed in the 10 districts of Telangana entering 17th day, life continues to remain crippled in the region.
The protestors stormed the offices and residences of various Congress MLAs, MPs and ministers on Thursday demanding their resignation and participation in the movement.
About 10,000 buses of the state road transport corporation continue to remain off the roads on Thursday as well while the activities at the Singareni Collieries too has not shown any improvement. Coal production at the collieries has completely stopped forcing the state government to look for alternate sources of coal.
The Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP has suffered fresh damage with one of its senior leaders and an MLA Gampa Govardhan quitting the party only to join the ranks of the TRS led by K Chandrasekhara Rao.
