Balapur Ganesh, Hyderabad Balapur Ganesh History, Balapur Ganesh Festival in Hyderabad
‘Balapur’ History mainly begins with the birth of Baba Sharbuddin in the area now known as “Balapur”. He was born in a house now named – “Gandham Kotti”. The story goes that –
After he was born, he went to “Devathala Gutta” to make it his abode. Since, another God – “Anjaneya” was already present there, he crossed the lake “Burrakhan” in one step and landed in “Pahadishariff” in another step. He dwelled there ever since.
Since it was the Birthplace of ‘Baba Sharbuddin’, the area came to be known as Balapur.
Three Generations ago, during the Post-Independence Period, the area – now known as Balapur mainly consisted of Hindus and Muslims. Due to the majority of the Hindu populace, the Muslims were force to vacate the area and move to an area now known as Barkas.
Once every year, all the Muslims from Pahadishariff move to Balapur to honor Baba Sharbuddin and celebrate the festival known famously as “Gandham”. All the villagers(be it Hindu or a Muslim), participate enthusiastically in this festival. A camel walks all the way from Balapur to Pahadishariff on a white carpet(the whole way). Three/Four days after the camel reaches Pahadishariff, a big feast is celebrated there.
The outset of the First Balapur Ganesh was in 1980 in the same village – ‘Balapur’ as a combined effort of the villagers, Balapur Ganesh Utsava Samithi Committee and the elders of the village. The celebrations in the first couple of years – 1981 and 1982 were small and colourful with everyone in the Balapur Village participating in the celebrations with hymns and praises to the Lord Vinayaka.
The setting out of the Balapur Ganesh was in the year 1980. Balapur Ganesh is immersed in tank bund every year. The reasons for this is:
- Hyderabad is synonymously called as Bhagayanagar. The Bhagayanagar Utsava Samithi, which belongs to Bhagayanagar city has declared that the Ganesh idols which were worshiped in the villages of Ranga Reddy (Dist) could be immersed in tank bund.
- Balapur Ganesh was first to accept this invitation from Ranga Reddy (Dist) in 1980 and was the first to acquire permissions regarding the same.
- From 1980, Balapur Ganesh is being immersed in Tank Bund of Hyderabad, and is aptly given the name “PRARAMBA GRAMA VINAYAKUDU” – ‘The idol which commences the main Ganesh immersion procession in Hyderabad’.
From 1980 to 1982, the Balapur Ganesh immersion festival ended peacefully but in the year 1983, it has undergone some communal disputes creating fear in the minds of the people of Hyderabad regarding religious festivals.
