Former minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, who was on an indefinite fast in support of the Telangana cause, was forcibly admitted to the state-run super specialty Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims) by police personnel after a swift early morning operation on Sunday.

The Congress legislator was evicted from his hungerstrike camp in Nalgonda at around 4 am after his health deteriorated on the sixth day of the fast and admitted him to the local government hospital. However, when doctors who have been attending on him said he could slip into a coma if he continued his fast for another 12 hours, the former minister was rushed to the intensive care unit at Nims.

Doctors at Nims issued a medical bulletin stating his condition was stable and fluids were being administered to him as he was reluctant to break his fast. Doctors said Reddy was running fever and had infection of his lung and kidney. The threetime Congress MLA began his fast on November 1, demanding statehood for Telangana region. He resigned from the state cabinet last month to register his protest against the delay in carving out Telangana state.

Police sources said his family was informed about the eviction plan and sought their co-operation in view of the leader’s deteriorating health.

The Nalgonda one-town police registered a case of ‘attempt to suicide’ (IPC Section 309) against Komatireddy, based on a representation given by Nalgonda tehsildar Basheeruddin.

Health minister D L Ravindra Reddy who visited the Nalgonda MLA at Nims said, “We brought him to Hyderabad as his health was a cause for concern. There were ketones in urine and potassium levels were also coming down. I was informed that there could be a problem if he was not attended to in 12 hours. Hence, we brought him to Hyderabad. His physical condition otherwise is alright.”

State Congress president Botsa Satyanarayana called on Reddy and urged him to call off his fast in view of an early positive assurance on the contentious issue by the party high command. However, Reddy is said to have conveyed his resolve to continue his fast till the Centre announced a favourable statement in support of Telangana state.

Ministers D Sridhar Babu, B Sarayya and D Nagendar visited Reddy at the emergency ward and made personal requests to the MLA to call off his fast. Party MPs and some senior Congress leaders who met at minister K Jana Reddy’s residence decided to urge AP Congress affairs in-charge Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is expected to return to Delhi from a foreign trip on Sunday evening, to make a telephonic request to Komatireddy to call off his fast.

Nalgonda Congress MP Gutta Sukhender Reddy who called on the fasting MLA said, “He wants to continue his fast. We appeal to the Centre to immediately accept the demand for separate Telangana state and put an end to all these agitations.

Congress MLC and All India Congress Committee secretary Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy said they had passed on the information about the MLA’s fast to Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel. Others who called on the MLA include Nagam Janardhan Reddy, balladeer Gadar and Telangana Jagruti president K Kavitha.
