Academics and research scholars of Scheduled Tribe demand that the Central government establish the proposed Tribal University in Telangana region as it has more percentage of tribal population.
Telangana University Tribal Teachers Association (TUTTA) president Prof. A. Sitaram Naik in a statement said there were 70 lakh tribals in Andhra Pradesh and of which the Telangana region has 9.9 per cent of tribal population compared to 2.8 per cent in Rayalaseema and 6.9 per cent in Andhra regions.
He said Union Minister Purendeswari was trying to prevail upon the Centre and lobbying to locate the proposed Tribal University in Srikakulam district.
The condition of tribals in Telangana region is pathetic with poor socio-economic conditions. “The tribals in rural areas are forced to brew illicit liquor to earn money. The menace is causing untold misery to tribal families’ themselves with men taking to alcohol at tender age and dying prematurely,” he pointed out.
Prof. Sitaram Naik said there were 12,000 widows in Warangal district alone. “As youth die young with alcohol, the women are left widowed at young age and leave the children orphaned. The women are forced into flesh trade with no other vocation to sustain their children and parents,” he explained.
Tribals constitute considerable percentage in north Telangana districts – Khammam, Karimnagar, Warangal and Adilabad from 20 to 42 per cent. However, the literacy rate of tribals is just 27 per cent.
A university or any other agency that envisages uplift of tribal community helps them a lot. The proposed university would help study more about the socio-economic conditions and may come with practical recommendations. “This university will also help the few educated tribal youth get jobs,” Prof. Sitaram Naik argued.
