Anna Hazare’s call for defiance found resonance across India. From Mumbai to Patna and from Chandigarh to Chennai, hundreds joined protest rallies in a spontaneous outpouring of support.
As Kisan Baburao Hazare (Anna Hazare) was being taken to jail, along with others, support for Team Anna swelled on the ground. Hundreds of pro-Anna supporters took to the streets courting arrest across the country
“We ask for our freedom not on 15th but on 16th August. We are with Anna Hazare,” said a supporter.
In India’s commercial capital, hundreds swarmed Mumbai’s Azad Maidan while 40 India Against Corruption volunteers were detained at Nerul.
In neighbouring Pune, pro-Anna supporters of the Nagarik Kriti Sameetee tonsured their heads as a mark of protest against the Government.
Ralegan Siddhi, the hometown of Anna Hazare, rallied behind the veteran activist. Locals blocked the road protesting the Government’s high-handedness.
“The Government can try and stop him, but the people of this nation will not let that happen,” said Anna’s daughter in law.
While Anna Hazare was whisked to an undisclosed location in the national Capital, diamond traders of Surat downed their shutters in Surat’s Varachcha area.
“You can muzzle one Anna…what about all the other Annas?” asked a supporter.
Supporters in Chandigarh surrounded the residence of Union Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal, a known Anna critic.
From Patna, where actor Manoj Tiwary joined the anti-graft chorus, to lawyers sitting on strike in Lucknow to Kerala’s school children protesting in Palakkad, the spirit of Team Anna remained resolute.
