Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday appealed to Anna Hazare to break his fast in a bid to break the deadlock over the Lokpal issue. Singh wrote a letter to Hazare and offered personal guarantee, saying that all the contentious issue raised by him and his supporters will be looked into and resolved at the earliest.
The Prime Minister wrote in his letter that if the Lok Sabha Speaker permits the Government will send the Jan Lokpal Bill to Parliament Standing Committee, which already has the Government’s version before it.
Hazare’s close aide Arvind Kejriwal, who met Union law Minister Salman Khurshid on Tuesday afternoon to break the logjam, said that Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee will mediate on behalf of the Government while the social activist will decide who will represent Team Anna.
“Team Anna will be represented by three people all of whom will be nominated by Anna,” said Kejriwal. Later Hazare nominated Kejriwal, senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan and former Indian Police Service officer Kiran Bedi to negotiate with Pranab.
The Kejriwal-Khurshid meeting took place at Congress MP from East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency Sandeep Diskhit’s residence. Dikshit was also present during the meeting.
Kiran Bedi called the breakthrough a result of Team Anna’s hard work. She also expressed concern about Hazare’s health as he has already lost more than 5.5 kgs over the past eight days.
“We don’t know what course the talks will take? The Government has called us for talks. It is a result of our hard work,” said Bedi.
Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi met Singh and discussed 74-year-old Hazare’s protest fast, which entered its eighth day on Tuesday. Singh will also veteran Maharashtra politician and Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar and discuss the issue.
