Medaram Sammakka Saralamma Jatara which is being recognized as South Indian Kumbh Mela will begin on 9^th February and continue till 11^th February, 2012. Large numbers of devotees visit the Jatara every year.

How to reach Medaram?

From Hyderabad one can reach Medaram via Warangal. Warangal is at a distance of 130 kms from Warangal and from there it is 110 kms to Medaram. Warangal is well connected with trains and buses from all parts of Andhra Pradesh. From Warangal one can take RTC buses or taxis or trains which will take the passengers up to Nalgonda railway station to reach Medaram. Nearby railway station to Medaram is Nalgonda Railway station which is at a distance of 54 km, Srirampuram Railway station at a distance of 56 km, Macheral railway station which is 56 kms and Tipparthi railway station which is at a distance of 60 kms from Medaram. RTC buses take the passengers up to Medaram. Nearby Air ports of Medaram are Warangal airport, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad, and Vijayawada Airport. Nearby cities are Warangal and Hanamkonda.

Visitors who come from Lakhnavaram to Medaram should reach Pasra travelling on the main road. From there a left turn is to be taken and Medaram is 24 kms from Pasra. There is another route from Pasra in which tourists should travel 13 kilometers and reach Tadvai and from there they have to take a left turn and travel 14 kms to reach Medaram

APSRTC will operate more than 1,000 buses to Medaram during the Sammakka Saralamma jatara that begins on 8^th February, 2012. From Mahatma Gandhi bus station one luxury bus will leave for every twenty minutes. APSRTC will run buses from all the districts of Telangana to Warangal for Medaram Jatara.

Sammakka Saralamma Jathara, also known as Medaram Sammakka Sarakka Jatara, is the largest tribal fair in the world. It is held once in two years with lot of gusto for 4 days during Magha Purnima. In 2012, Medaram Sammakka Sarakka Jathara dates are – Jatara starts on February 8 and ends on February 11. February 10, 2012 – Devotees offer naivedyam or other offerings like ‘Bangaram (bellam – jaggery).
February 11, 2012 – Last day of Sammkka Sarakka Jathara. Goddess Sammakkar and Saralamma will return back in to forest.

Medaram Jatara Interesting facts

• Nearly 80 lakh devotes visited Medaram Jatara in 2010. Officials are expecting the number to reach one crore in 2012.
• More than five lakh devotees utilized the services of APSRTC during 2012 Medaram jatara. There is a chance that this number will increase this year.

APSRTC is running nearly thousand special buses to Medaram in for Medaram Jatara. A bus leaves MGBS, Hyderabad for every 20 minutes to Medaram.

Accommodation at Medaram

Medaram Sammakka Saralamma jatara is a tribal festival held for every two years. In 2012 the Jatara begins on 8^th February. Pilgrims, who reach Medaram Jatara, first take bath in the Jampanna vagu and go for the darshan of Deities. Government is constructing bathing ghats at the Jampanna vagu. Devotees take Jaggery which is offered to the deities.

Pilgrims who go to Medaram Jatara can get accommodation at the surrounding villages of Medaram. Accommodation will also be available in nearby places like Tandvai, Warangal etc. Warangal has many good hotels and lodges with good facilities. Temporary dwellings come up around the village during the festival. Those who want to stay in Medaram should take blankets, torch lights, match boxes, stove, and all the cooking equipment along with them. Medical kit also should be carried as a precautionary measure. Since there will be heavy rush of devotees it is better to avoid wearing gold ornaments. Children should be taken great care as there is a chance for them to miss in the crowd.

Arrangements for Medaram fair, the largest fair in Asia that brings pride to Warangal District, are in full swing. The Medaram fair, which will be held from February 8 to 11, draws lakhs of tribals apart from politicians, officials and people from neighbouring states. People come to visit tribal deities Sammakka-Saralamma.

Medaram, located amidst dense forests at Thadwai mandal, is 110 kms away from Warangal. The Medaram fair, which is celebrated once every two years, begins on a full moon day of the Telugu month Magham. Well before the celebrations, ministers and VIPs from other states are visiting the place to the platform of the deities. Chief Minister along with the Ministers is due to visit the fair.

Saralamma arrives at the platform from Kannepally at 4 pm on February 8, followed by Sammakka, who would reach the venue from Chilukala Gutta at 5 pm the next day. On the third day, the devotees fulfill the vows and offer prayers to the forest nymphs and the celebrations conclude on the fourth day, i.e. on February 11, when the deities return to the forest.

Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy is scheduled to attend the fair on February 8, while the TDP sources revealed that Nara Chandrababu Naidu would visit the deities on February 4. According to BJP sources, Chattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh’s visit is going to coincide with that of the BJP state president Kishan Reddy on February 9.

Apart from them, TRS cadre including K Chandrasekhar Rao, Vijayashanthi and others are expected to visit the fair. A helipad is also arranged to cater to the needs of the VIPs. The state government allocated Rs 60 crore to make arrangements for the devotees.

RTC is plying over 3159 buses and the medical and health department is deploying 150 doctors and 500 paramedical personnel and in addition to them Nursing Home Association and Indian Medical Association doctors would render services along the highway. Even 108 services would remain on guard. Apart from that a 60 bed temporary hospital would be kept ready.

As it is the Maoist-affected area, two days ago, Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar, Sanjay Kumar Jain, the Karimnagar Range DIG, accompanied by Mulug ASP Sinthil Kumar inspected the helipad, bath ghats, toilets and other facilities for VIPs.

The police sources said that about 8000 police personnel would be deployed for security needs. In addition to that 48 closed circuit cameras are to be arranged to check the crime rate. A Lok Adalat is being arranged with permission of the district Judge, to dispose the cases quickly.

The police department is making arrangements for lockers for the devotees at bath ghats to preserve their valuables. Kaka Saraiah, a priest, stated that the ceremonies would be conducted as per the traditions of the tribes and that the priests maintain their presence at different prime locations to meet the conveniences of the devotees.

Sammakka and Saralamma were heroic ladies who fought against the Kakatiya King Prathaparudra during the 13th Century. The fair was started to commemorate their heroic deeds .

ఆదిలాబాద్ జిల్లా సిర్పూర్(టీ)లో ఆదివాసీలు ర్యాలీ, జేఏసీ ఆధ్వర్యంలో ఆసిఫాబాద్‌లో రాస్తారోకో, తాండూరులో ఏఐఎస్‌ఎఫ్, ఏఐవైఎఫ్ ఆధ్వర్యంలో సీఎం దిష్టిబొమ్మను దహ నం చేశారు. నిర్మల్‌లో న్యాయవాదుల గుమస్తాలు, మంచిర్యాలలో జ్యుడీషియల్ సిబ్బంది రిలే దీక్షలు కొనసాగుతున్నా యి. దండేపల్లిలో రెడ్డిపరివార్ ఆధ్వర్యంలో దీక్ష చేపట్టారు. చెన్నూర్‌లో అమరుల ఆత్మశాంతి కోసం కొవ్వొత్తుల ర్యాలీ, ఆదిలాబాద్‌లో ఉద్యోగులు రోడ్లు ఊడ్చి, మున్సిపల్ ఉద్యోగులు అర్ధనగ్న ప్రదర్శన, నోటికి నల్ల గుడ్డ కట్టుకొని జ్యుడీషియల్ ఉద్యోగులు నిరసన తెలిపారు. టీటీజేఏసీ సమ్మె విరమించడాన్ని నిరసిస్తూ తెలంగాణవాదులు తలమడుగు మం డల జేఏసీ ఆధ్వర్యంలో ఉపాధ్యాయులకు పువ్వులు, గాజులు అందచేశారు. ఖానాపూర్ కలప డిపోలో ప్రతినెల 22న జరిగే వేలంపాటను ఉద్యమకారులు అడ్డుకున్నారు.

వరంగల్ బల్దియా ఆధ్వర్యంలో టీ మంత్రుల ఫ్లెక్సీలపై చెత్తపోసి వినూత్న రీతిలో నిరసన తెలిపా రు. పశుసంవర్ధ్దకశాఖ, ఎన్‌పీడీసీఎల్, పాలిటెక్నిక్ విద్యార్థుల నిరసనలు, నిరాహార దీక్షలు కొనసాగుతున్నాయి. వడుప్సా పిలుపు మేరకు విద్యార్థులు ప్రధానమం త్రికి పోస్టుకార్డులు పంపే ఉద్యమానికి శ్రీకారంచుట్టారు. టీ మంత్రుల దిష్టిబొమ్మలను పలుక్షిగామాల్లో శవయావూతలు నిర్వహించి నిరసనలు తెలిపారు. న్యాయశాఖ ఉద్యోగులు కోర్టుల వద్ద నోటికి నల్లబట్ట కట్టుకొని నిరసన తెలిపారు. ఇందిరాగాంధీ విగ్రహాలకు వినతిపవూతాలు ఇచ్చి సోని యా బుద్ధి మార్చాలంటూ వేడుకున్నారు.

మెదక్ జిల్లా పటాన్‌చెరు, నర్సాపూర్‌లో టీఆర్‌ఎస్, ఉద్యోగ సంఘాల ఆధ్వర్యంలో మోకాళ్లపై నిలబడి, ఖేడ్‌లో ఉద్యోగు లు కళ్లు, చెవులు మూసుకుని నిరసన వ్యక్తం చేశారు. మెదక్‌లో టీఎన్జీఓలు దీక్ష చేపట్టారు. మండలం బొడ్మట్‌పల్లిలో జానాడ్డి, దుబ్బాక, తొగుట, జహీరాబాద్‌లో ఏబీవీ పీ కార్యకర్తలు డిప్యూటీ సీఎం రాజనర్సింహ దిష్టిబొమ్మలను దహనం చేశారు. విద్యుత్, కోర్టు, వైద్య సిబ్బంది దీక్షలు కొనసాగించారు. సంగాడ్డిలో విశ్వవూబాహ్మణ మనుమయ సం ఘం ఆధ్వర్యంలో భారీ ర్యాలీ, ధూంధాం నిర్వహించారు.

ప్రభుత్వ డ్రైవర్ల సంఘం దీక్ష
కరీంనగర్ కలెక్టరేట్‌లో ప్రభుత్వ డ్రైవర్ల సంఘం ఆధ్వర్యంలో డ్రైవర్లు దీక్ష చేపట్టారు. టీఎన్‌జీఓ సంఘం అధ్యక్ష, కార్యదర్శులు హమీద్, నర్సింహస్వామి మాట్లాడుతూ అధికారులు జరిపిన చర్చలను తిప్పికొట్టినట్లు తెలిపారు. జగిత్యాలలో చేనేత కార్మికులు రాట్నం, మరమగ్గాలతో, కమలాపూర్‌లో మందకృష్ణ డబ్బులకు అమ్ముడుపోయాడంటూ నిరసన వ్యక్తం చేశారు. సీపీఐ నేతలు చేపట్టిన 24 గంటల దీక్ష శనివారం విరమించారు. టీ చౌక్‌లో కుల సంఘాల ఆధ్వర్యంలో రోడ్డును ఊడ్చి నిరసన వ్యక్తం చేశారు. మంథని నియోజకవర్గం కాటారంలో విద్యార్థులు, మహదేవపూర్‌లో మేదర సంఘం ఆధ్వర్యంలో ర్యాలీ తీయగా, హుస్నాబాద్‌లో దీక్ష కొనసాగింది.

టీఎన్జీఓ సంఘం హైదరాబాద్ జిల్లా అధ్యక్షుడు కృష్ణయాదవ్ ఆధ్వర్యంలో మంత్రి రాంరెడ్డి వెంకటడ్డి దిష్టిబొమ్మను దహ నం చేశారు. ఎల్బీనగర్‌లో కాంగ్రెస్ కోర్ కమిటీకి శవయాత్ర నిర్వహించి దహనం చేశారు. విద్యుత్‌సౌధలో టీ జేఏసీ సమన్వయకర్త రఘు 72 గంటల దీక్ష ప్రారంభించారు. పర్యాటకశాఖలో చేపట్టిన నిరాహార దీక్షా శిబిరాన్ని మాజీ మంత్రి జూపల్లి కృష్ణారావు సందర్శించారు. సీపీడీసీఎల్, ఉద్యానవనశాఖ, ఆర్‌అండ్‌బీ చీఫ్ ఇంజినీరింగ్ కార్యాలయాల్లో ఉద్యోగులు దీక్షలు చేపట్టారు. ఉస్మానియా దవాఖానలో ప్రభుత్వ డాక్టర్ల జేఏసీ కన్వీనర్ రమేష్ ఆధ్వర్యంలో చండీయాగం, నిలోఫర్‌లో డాక్టర్లు నిరసన ప్రదర్శన, ఔషద నియంవూతణమండలిలో నాలుగో తరగతి ఉద్యోగులకు అధికారులు ఆర్థిక సహాయం, హిమాయత్‌నగర్ పంచాయతీరాజ్ కార్యాలయంలో ధూంధాం నిర్వహించారు.

Bathukamma festival is the biggest cultural festival of Telangana region in Andhra Pradesh. Bathukamma 2011 date is October 4. The festival starts on September 27 and ends on October 4 with Saddula Bathukamma and Bathukamma nimajjanam. This year, Telangana Jagruti, a cultural organization, will celebrate Batukamma vedukalu in the association of TNews Channel & Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). They will celebrate Bathukamma 2011 as Ooroora Bathukamma & Koti Bathukammala Jathara which is aimed to active participation of more than 10 millions (‘Koti’ means crore in Telugu) of Telangana women in the festival.

The organization is going to organize the proud fest of Telangana in every town and village in the state, New Delhi and in United States of America, Australia, UK and Dubai from the first day of Durga Navaratri. The celebrations may end on Bathukamma pandaga (the culmination or immersion day of Bathkamma). Jagruti is planning to organize Jatharas (fairs) in selected places in Telangana region.

Batukamma comes during  the latter half  of  monsoon, much before the onset of winter. The monsoon rains would have brought plenty of water into the ‘cheruvulu’ (fresh water ponds that are a major source of  irrigation through out Telangana) and the wild flowers bloom in various vibrant  colors all across the uncultivated and barren plains of the region. The most abundant of these are the ‘gunuka poolu’ and  ‘tangedi poolu’. There are other flowers too like the banti, chemanti, nandi-vardhanam etc. The ‘shilpakka pandlu’ (or ‘sitpala pandlu’) are another great attraction of these barren lands during this season. This custard apple (‘seeta phalamu’ in text book language)  is a great tasting fruit that  grows in the wild with little or no water and is often called the poor man’s apple. Then there is  corn (jonna and mokka jonna) waiting to be harvested. Amidst these,  Batukamma is celebrated by the women folk of Telangana, heralding the beauty of nature in vibrant colors of multitudinous flowers.

The festival begins a week before the grand ‘saddula Batukamma’ (the grand finale of the Batukamma festival) which is two days before Dassera. The women folk normally get back to their parents’ homes from their in-laws  and breathe the fresh air of freedom to celebrate the colors of flowers. For one whole week they make small ‘Batukammas’, play around them every evening and immerse them in a near by water pond. Then the last day is the most fascinating. On that day the men folk of the house go into the wild plains and gather the flowers like gunuka and tangedi. They bring home bagfuls of these flowers and the entire house hold sits down to make the big ‘Batukamma’. The flowers are carefully arranged row after row in a brass plate (called taambalam) in circular rows and in alternate colors. The Batukamma grows in size and the bigger it is the better. The white gunuka flowers are colored using water paints and Batukamma gets colorful circular layers of them along with tangedi in between. Then it placed in front of the deity of the home and prayed.

As evening approaches the womenfolk dress colorfully with the best of their attire and put on lot of ornaments and place the Batukamma in their ‘vaakili’ (court yard). The women of neighborhood also join with their own “Batukammalu” and all of them gather in a large circle around it. They sing songs by going around it building a beautiful human circle of unity, love, sisterhood. They all sing in chorus after a lead singer starts off and the rhythms of the folklore songs reverberate in the neighborhood sounding the uniqueness of Telangana cultural identity.

After playing around the “Batukammalu”, before the onset of dusk, the women folk carry them on their heads and go as a procession towards a bigger water lake of the village or town. The procession is extremely colorful with the decorations of women and the “Batukammalu”. Songs of folklore are sung in chorus throughout the procession and the streets resonate with them. Finally when they reach the water pond the “Batukammalu” are  slowly immersed into water after some more playing and singing. Then they share the ‘maleeda’ (a dessert made with sugar or raw sugar and corn bread) sweets amongst the family members and neighborhood folks. They return back to their homes with empty ‘taambaalam’ singing songs in praise of Batukamma. The songs of Batukamma echo in the streets until late night during thie entire week.

Why is Batukamma celebrated? There are several legends around it. One of the prominent is that of a girl who committed suicide due to atrocities of a feudal land lord and then she was blessed by the people of the village to live longer a happier life (Batukamma means live). The other one is also about a girl who ends her life but due to family disturbances. However it is a festival associated with womenfolk and them remembering the girl who ended her life. They pray to mother goddess Gowri that they should not face any difficulties and that their husbands live longer and their families be prosperous.

On the hand, Batukamma is a great celebration of preservation of nature’s harmony. It is the season of blooming flowers and overflowing water ponds, that Batukamma comes  in and it celebrates  the inherent relationship between earth, water and the human beings. During the whole preceding week, women make ‘boddemma’ (a deity of Gowri – mother Durga – made with earthly mud) along with Batukamma and immerse it in the pond. This helps reinforce the ponds and helps it retain more water. The flowers used in Batukamma have a great quality of purifying water (and one of them is now being heralded as a medicine to cancer) and such flowers when immersed in abundance into the pond have the effect of cleansing the water and making the environment much better. In times where the fresh water ponds are gradually diminishing and dwindling away it is indeed a pride of  Telangana that its womenfolk (with mostly agrarian background) inherently know how to make them better by celebrating the beauty of nature. It is something we need to be indeed proud of.

Even across the world such festivals that involve flowers and fresh water are a rarity.  There are river-based festivals known, but this one is definitely unique to Telangana. It serves multiple purposes– it heralds the beauty of nature, collective spirit of Telangana people, the indomitable spirit of women folks and also the scientific approach of the agrarian people towards preserving the resources of nature in a celebrative way.  That’s why Batukamma is the  icon of  cultural identity of Telangana!
