As of January 19, 2012, the Megaupload website has been closed by the FBI, and seven people have been charged with “running an international criminal enterprise centered on copyright infringement on the Internet.” Reportedly, Megaupload failed to comply with DMCA provisions.

Is Megaupload responsible for the copyrighted, user-generated content on its site? What about all the valuable, legal content that has now been lost? Are other “cyberlockers” next on the chopping block?

MegaUpload has been shut down by the US federal government. Remind us why we need stronger anti-piracy laws again…

File-sharing mecca MegaUpload.com is dead, shut down at the hands of the US federal government. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has arrested four people, and charged three others, in the anti-piracy sting. The forced closure of MegaUpload comes just one day after a mass online protest against two pieces of legislation that aim to increase the power of copyright holders to block access to websites that illegally distribute intellectual property, like music and movies.

Those arrested include MegaUpload founder Kim “Dotcom” Schmitz, along with three others related to the site. The group was apprehended in New Zealand, with the help of that country’s authorities. MegaUpload is officially a Hong Kong-based company, though according to the Justice Department, it also has servers in Ashburn, VA, Washington DC, the Netherlands and Canada. Schmidtz is a resident of both Hong Kong and New Zealand.

The indictment against MegaUpload, a site that allowed users to upload anything from a text file to a full feature film, then share a link to the file with others, says the site cost copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue by making their intellectual property free to download. It also says that MegaUpload (aka “the conspirators”) earned $175 million in profits from advertising and premium memberships. Schmitz alone earned $42 million in 2010 from the site, the indictment claims.

In a statement posted to MegaUpload, before its takedown, the company asserted that the majority of its content was legitimate, and the claims of lost revenue were “grotesquely overblown.”

“The fact is that the vast majority of Mega’s Internet traffic is legitimate, and we are here to stay. If the content industry would like to take advantage of our popularity, we are happy to enter into a dialogue. We have some good ideas. Please get in touch,” the company said.

MegaUpload boasted “more than 150 million registered users, 50 million daily visitors and accounting for four percent of the total traffic on the Internet,” according to the Justice Department, whose website was also unable to load, at the start of this writing. According to Twitter user AnonymousIRC, a highly-popular account related to the hacktivist group ‘Anonymous,’ the DoJ’s website appeared to have been “besieged by pirates.” It is unclear at this time whether Anonymous had anything to do with the outage, which has since been resolved.

UPDATE: It is now glaringly clear that Anonymous was behind the DDoS attack that took down Justice.gov, along with the websites of Universal Music, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the White House, the US Copyright Office and the FBI, among others. Needless to say, this isn’t going to go over well in Washington.

In addition to having been one of the most-widely-used file-sharing sites on the Web, MegaUpload is also unique because of its endorsements from artists like Kanye West, Will.i.am, and Alicia Keys. Kim Kardashian, who is not an artist, also endorsed the site. Renowned rapper, producer, and NYU professor Kaseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean is listed as MegaUpload’s CEO. (Not coincidentally, Beatz is also Alicia Keys’ husband.) Judging by his recent tweets, the last of which came five hours ago, Beatz still appears to be free, and apparently just ate some Chinese food.

Federal authorities say that the timing of MegaUpload’s takedown had nothing to do with Wednesday’s blackout protest against the “Stop Online Piracy Act” (SOPA) and the “PROTECT IP Act” (PIPA). And that’s most certainly true; this kind of sting doesn’t just happen overnight. But that doesn’t mean the two will remain unrelated in the minds of the public.

This case clearly proves that our government already has the ability to shutdown a website, whose company is based in Hong Kong, and have its employees arrested by the police of another foreign country. That isn’t exactly a compelling argument for giving copyright holders and the federal government more power to combat piracy from “foreign rogue websites,” which is the primary aim of both SOPA and PIPA.

Of course, it appears as though MegaUpload isn’t actually considered a “foreign” rogue site, even though its base of operations is in China, due to the fact that it had servers housed in the US. SOPA and PIPA gives the power to block access to — but not entirely shut down — websites that operate exclusively outside the US. After this monstrous display of muscle flexing, however, we doubt many people will have sympathy for that distinction.

That said, combating the piracy of websites that operate outside the rule of US law really isn’t a matter of contention in the SOPA/PIPA debate. It’s all the “unintended consequences” and “collateral damage” that educated critics say the bills’ loose wording could lead to — things like the blockage of legitimate free speech, the squashing of online innovation, and the potential damage to the Internet’s infrastructure — that have the masses seething. The takedown of MegaUpload merely shows that our anti-piracy laws aren’t as weak as some would like us to believe.

After the Lok Sabha passed a Lokpal Bill that Team Anna is extremely unhappy with, Anna Hazare’s health is becoming a major cause of concern for both his team and the government. At the end of his first day of hungerstrike, Anna’s fever had climbed to 102 degrees and his blood pressure was 170/104.

However, Anna’s temperature came down slightly on Wednesday morning, the second day of his three-day fast. Team Anna member Manish Sisodia said Anna’s temperature was 100 degrees in the morning. But, doctors are still urging the 74-year-old Gandhian to end his fast.

Doctors will take a decision on whether Anna should be moved to a hospital in the morning today.

Anna’s family physician Dr Anirudh Dharmadhikari wants him to end the fast.

“He is stubborn and is sticking to his fast. In this state, it is wrong of him to fast. We might need to hospitalise him because he is coughing, has fever,” he said on Tuesday night.

Doctors from Mumbai’s JJ Hospital are stationed now at his camp at MMRDA Grounds and an ambulance is on stand-by.

Anna is fasting for three days at the Mumbai’s MMRDA Ground in protests of what he and his team call a ‘weak’ Lokpal Bill. After ending his fast on December, Anna and his group of social activists plan to head to the national capital where they will launch a ‘jail bharo’ movement by protesting in front of the houses of Congress leaders like Sonia Gandhi and her son, Rahul Gandhi.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has requested Anna to end his fast and so have his team members. Anna’s aides Arvind Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi appealed to him to end his fast.

“He has fever, let us request him to stop his fast. Anna can continue his dharna,” Ms Bedi said.

“Anna is unwell. Will you request Anna to withdraw his fast?” she asked the crowd, which responded with a loud “Yes”.

However, Anna, waved his hand to indicate he will not change his mind.

Anna’s family is also worried about his health and have also not eaten anything. The family of Maruti Hazare, Anna’s younger brother, revealed their frustration with the whole situation.

“On one hand they say they want to make India a super democracy and on the other hand this happens,” said Nisha, Maruti Hazare’s granddaughter Residents of Anna’s village, Ralegan Siddhi, have also expressed their concern and will visit him today. On Tuesday afternoon at the MMRDA Ground, Anna gave an impassioned speech about the Lokpal Bill.

He reiterated his opposition to the government for betraying the country. Anna said if politicians don’t rise to the occasion, he will campaign against the Congress. “There are elections in a few states, but what will they do to us at the national level (is what the government thinks). But in these five states that are voting, we will campaign against the government. You have not seen what people power is. It is more powerful than Parliament.”

He also stressed the need for electoral reforms. “The sort of people who are joining politics now are criminals, goondas. What will become of our country then? This is why we need to fight for the Right to Reject (electoral candidates). There are 10 candidates standing for elections. Yet, voters have nobody to choose from. So we should have the right to say “none of the above.” And if there are many who choose this option, then the election for that constituency should be cancelled. We will have to fight for these laws.”

Anna Hazare will on Tuesday begin his three-day fast against the “weak” Lokpal Bill tabled by the government in Parliament.

Hazare, who reached here last night from his village Ralegan Siddhi, will pay respects at Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in Juhu and proceed to the fast venue, MMRDA ground, in suburban Bandra in a rally.

Amid concerns over his health as he was suffering from viral infection, Hazare had yesterday said he will go ahead with his protest and claimed that his movement was not against any side, person or party.

“Although today is a working day, we are confident about offering a strong, overwhelming reception to our 74-year -old veteran, who is leaving no stone unturned for the betterment of our very own future,” an IAC spokesperson said.

The rally will pass through Santacruz, Tulip Star hotel, Mithibai college, S V Road, Vile Parle, Khar and Bandra Highway.

Maharashtra government has said all necessary security arrangements have been made for the stir in Mumbai.

Additional Chief Secretary (Home) U C Sarangi chaired a high-level meeting yesterday where he reviewed the law and order situation and security scenario in the city ahead of Hazare’s fast.

Police have fortified the fast venue by deploying 2000 police constables and 200 sub-inspectors of police, six platoons of state reserve police force, three teams of Quick Response Team and two Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads.

The ground has six emergency exits, 16 fire extinguishers, six metal detector units and round-the-clock ambulance services.

Actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi is chalking out plans to set up a studio in the port city, Vizag. Recently, the Bhimili revenue authorities have conducted a survey to identify the land for Chiru’s proposed studio.

Although Chiranjeevi thought of setting up the studio in Hyderabad itself, after discussing with his coterie he has zeroed in on Vizag to make it a major hub for film shootings. Already, producer D Ramanaidu has established his film studio in Vizag. Sources say, “The Telangana issue has prompted Chiru to do so”.

According to the Govt. records, Over 40 percent of the income in the state is generated by Hyderabad and Andhra plays a huge role in the income generation. The people from Andhra has contributed a lot to the government revenue with their investments. However, due to the ongoing stir in the Telangana region the entire scenario has been changed. Apart from attracting the investments from outside, the Andhra people are showing keen interest in investing in their own region. The uncertainty prevailing in the state on the separate Telangana issue is prompting them to do so.

The famed tribal festival of Sammakka-Sarakka jatara will be conducted in February 2012 in Medaram village in Eturunagaram mandal in Warangal district.

The jatara, which is held every two years, will be organised for four days from February eighth, next year. The decision was taken at a meeting by the organising committee along with the district officials on Thursday. Lakhs of tribal throng the jatara from all corners of the country.

While tribes from Warangal, Khammam, Adilabab and other districts of AP swarm the village for the four-day jatara, people from Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra will also come in thousands to take part in the festival. The tribal pitch make-shift tents in and around the village during the jatara and worship the tribal goddesses of Sammakka and Sarakka.
