కరీంనగర్‌ : జిల్లాలోని జగిత్యాల మండలం, లక్ష్మీపూర్‌ గ్రామానికి చెందిన అటుకుల రాహుల్‌ ఇంటర్‌ సెంకడియర్‌ బైపీసీ విభాగంలో 989 మార్కులు సంపాదించి రాష్ట్రంలోనే ప్రథమ స్థానంలో నిలిచాడు. రాహుల్‌ తల్లి చిన్నవయసులోనే చనిపోయింది. తండ్రి దేవయ్య వ్యవసాయ కూలీగా జీవనం సాగిస్తున్నాడు.

At a press conference here on Tuesday, the chief minister said that her Cabinet would table a resolution in the assembly, during the session beginning on November 21, for the division of Uttar Pradesh into Poorvanchal (eastern-UP), Bundelkhand, Awadh Pradesh (central-UP) and Paschim Pradesh (western-UP). She said that BSP had earlier created new districts for better administration and has always been in favour of division of UP into smaller states for better governance.

The mandate for creation of new states lies with the Centre. Although Congress is in-principle not opposed to division of UP, its prevarication on Telangana suggests that it could react in the same manner here. The SP and BJP are opposed to UP’s division and would struggle to find a strategy to counter BSP’s masterstroke.

Hence, Mayawati hopes to change the political discourse, currently focussed on her government’s performance. While she loses nothing by proposing the division of UP, any delay could be blamed on Congress which leads the government at the Centre.

The UP assembly after passing the resolution would send it to the Centre. BSP hopes to pander to the sub-regional sentiments during the poll campaign by pointing out that she has shown her commitment to the cause of smaller states.

The Congress-led UPA is already in a dilemma over the demand for creation of Telangana in Andhra Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, which together 122 MPs to Parliament, are crucial to Congress and its UPA government. It was a consecutive strong showing in AP, in 2009, and a surprise performance in UP, where Congress had been languishing for the last two decades, that helped it win more than 200 seats and form the UPA-II government.

Mayawati hopes to blunt the aggressive campaign of Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi with the ‘state division card’. Congress would find it hard to explain its stand on the creation of new states as the election campaign picks up. Gandhi through his frequent forays into villages of drought-affected Bundelkhand and more recently in western-UP (Bhatta Parsaul and march to Aligarh) has been trying to create a constituency for Congress in the area.

Congress is also on the verge of finalising a pre-poll pact with the RLD’s Ajit Singh, a strong votary of statehood for Harit Pradesh (western UP). Mayawati hopes to neutralise Congress’ gains from an alliance with RLD by the resolution.
